Centre for Godavari River Basin Management Studies

The Centre for Godavari River Basin Management (cGodavari), established by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to assess and develop a management plan for the Godavari River basin. This study is a collaboration between the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), a leading laboratory in environmental science and engineering, and IIT Hyderabad. The progress of the project is overseen by cGanga at IIT Kanpur.

The main objective is to create an integrated river basin management plan to restore and conserve the river's ecological health, which has been significantly compromised by competing human demands for its resources. This involves assessing the current conditions of the river and formulating a comprehensive plan for rejuvenation and conservation, focusing on the impact of human activities.

The management plan emphasizes five key pillars:

  • Continuous River Flow (Aviral Dhara)
  • Unpolluted River Flow (Nirmal Dhara)
  • Longitudinal and Lateral Connectivity
  • Adequate Space for Essential River Functions
  • Functioning of the River as an Ecological Entity

In summary, the initiative seeks to enhance the ecological integrity of the Godavari River by addressing environmental challenges and ensuring sustainable use of its resources.

About Us

The Centre for Godavari River Basin Management (cGodavari) is a collaborative initiative focused on addressing the pressing environmental challenges facing the Godavari River Basin. Our commitment lies in promoting sustainable management and conservation practices across the states that the river traverses. Formed through a Memorandum of Agreement involving the Ministry of Jal Shakti (Government of India), IIT Kanpur, and a consortium of IIT Hyderabad and other institutes, our mission is to develop comprehensive management plans that restore and preserve the ecological integrity of the Godavari River and its tributaries.
